This was a fun one. Originally, I was supposed to be going to this with my brother, but he couldnāt make it. Thankfully, my buddy Eric was able to step and and join me for his second show at Tupelo.
And to make it even more exciting, my cousins Matt and Joe were meeting us there! Matt I just saw a few weeks ago visiting his family in the “Middle-of-Nowhere” New York. Joe I hadnāt seen since last year.
They missed the opening band, Platinum Moon. I assumed they were a local band, but they actually hail from New York and are part of this tour. I never felt older at a rock show than with this band. They looked like kids up there! But they played great! I was quite impressed.
The next band of the night was Wheatus. They were a band I knew with a song that Iāve loved for years. Theyāre big hit was from 2000, and looking back at their videos it just feels like 2000, if that make sense.
They were fun too. Had two drummers on stage (or one drummer and one percussionist?) that switched back and forth a couple times. They played the song I knew and a bunch of songs I didnāt. The funniest part was that Eric was a fan of theirs, had at least one of their records – and then knew none of the songs!
Matt and Joe showed up in the middle of their set, in time for Ugly Kid Joe (or UKJ as Matt calls them). As funny as it was that Eric didnāt know the Wheatus songs was, we were laughing even more by just how many UKJ songs Matt knew. Pretty much all of them!
I knew slightly less than a handful – but I have to tell you, they sounded great. That guy could always sing, and he still had that strong voice. He didnāt love the lights on stage – wanted to be able to see us more (which I guess is nice) so he kept having the lighting person lower the spotlights. We could still see him pretty much.
But, hearing them was the most important part, and that we did…
